European Parliament Votes to Approve the AI Act

On March 13, 2024, the European Parliament's plenary voted to approve the Artificial Intelligence Act by an overwhelming majority. Following the political agreement of December 2023, the world's first comprehensive AI legislation cleared the key step of the legislative process and is expected to take effect in phases after formal publication.

Within the Act's risk-tiered regulatory framework, the transparency obligations relate most directly to the language industry: AI-generated or manipulated content (including machine translation and AI writing) must be labeled appropriately, and providers of general-purpose AI models must meet disclosure duties including technical documentation and training-data summaries. These requirements will directly shape how language technology products are designed and delivered in the EU market.

For language service providers, the Act's passage turns "AI use disclosure" from best practice into the prelude of a compliance requirement. Forward-looking companies are already acting: specifying the human-machine split in service agreements, keeping process records for AI-assisted translations, and building disclosure mechanisms clients can query. In the compliance era, these investments become competitive moats.

From proposal in 2021 to approval in 2024, the EU took three years to write the first complete rulebook for the AI era. For globalizing companies, understanding these rules is now a required course for entering Europe.
