ATA64 Miami: A 'New Contract' Between Translators and AI

From October 25 to 28, 2023, the American Translators Association (ATA) held its 64th Annual Conference in Miami. AI-related sessions took up half the agenda — and the program revealed an important shift in the translator community's mindset: from "will AI replace me?" to "how should I divide the work with AI?"

The hot topics reflected pragmatic concerns: hands-on workshops on LLM-assisted translation filled every room, with prompt engineering the most popular new skill; pricing the review of AI output — how to explain to clients the value difference between "reviewing AI translation" and "translating from scratch" — sparked heated discussion; and the red lines of data privacy and client confidentiality in AI tool use became the core of the professional-ethics track.

The interpreting track focused on the twin evolution of "remote + AI": RSI platforms keep iterating, AI live captions are entering meeting scenarios, and the interpreter's role definition and skill list are both being rewritten.

From Los Angeles to Miami, in one year the ATA conference's AI conversation moved from "curiosity at the margins" to "center of the agenda". The translator community's capacity to adapt and learn is exactly the confidence with which this profession crosses technology cycles.
