Web Summit Returns to Lisbon: A Signal of Recovery for Live Events

From November 1 to 4, 2021, Web Summit took place in person in Lisbon, Portugal, drawing more than 40,000 attendees — one of the largest in-person tech gatherings in Europe since the pandemic began, and widely read as a weathervane for the recovery of the international events industry.

For the language services industry, the return of mega-events matters enormously. Conference interpreting was the segment hit hardest by the pandemic: for nearly two years, conferences were cancelled or moved online, and demand for on-site SI fell to freezing point. The return of large events like Web Summit — combined with rising vaccination rates and gradually resuming international travel — gives the conference interpreting market its first substantive signs of thaw.

Yet the return is no simple restoration. This edition kept livestreams and remote participation channels; the hybrid "in-person + online" form has become the default design for large events. Conference interpreting services upgrade accordingly: on-site SI and remote SI coexist, and interpreters must be fluent in both working states.

The recovery of the events industry will be gradual, but its direction is clear. For conference interpreters, the winter of 2021 is far warmer than that of 2020.
