The Translator Profession in 2024: The Skill List, Rewritten

At the close of 2024, looking back at a year of evolution in the translation profession, the most visible change is written in job postings and training catalogs: the translator's skill list has been completely rewritten.

The new list includes: prompt engineering — precisely specifying translation needs to AI and designing reusable prompt templates; AI output verification — spotting LLMs' "confident hallucinations" and systematically checking figures, proper nouns and logical relations; terminology asset management — building and maintaining term bases so institutional knowledge settles into reusable assets; toolchain command — combining CAT tools, TMS platforms and AI plugins; and above all, domain expertise — depth in legal, medical or technical fields, the greatest source of translator premium in the AI era.

Career forms are differentiating too: freelancers are transforming into "domain expert + AI operator", enterprises are creating roles like "language quality engineer" and "AI review specialist", and translation companies are recruiting "project managers who understand AI". Though translation programs' enrollment has been disturbed by the "AI replacement" narrative, graduates of programs that rebuilt their curricula fast are more sought-after than ever.

The prophecy of "translator unemployment" from two years ago did not come true. What came true is another version: translators who don't use AI are being overtaken by translators who do. The profession's core has never changed — answering for the quality of cross-language communication — but the way of answering has evolved forever.
