Common Techniques for Spanish Simultaneous Interpreting

Spanish is one of today's popular SI languages, but Spanish SI is not as simple as other language pairs. SI itself is among the most demanding forms of interpreting — two interpreters sharing a small booth to cover an entire conference. What techniques and methods are common in Spanish SI?

1. Active listening. SI is listen-and-render simultaneously, with only seconds between input and output: while verbally rendering what was heard seconds ago, the interpreter must keep taking in new information. Listening in SI is never purely passive — cues such as the conference theme, the speaker's position, and background knowledge of the topic turn passive listening into active anticipation.

2. Free translation. The simultaneity forces the interpreter to "split the mind in two", making it impossible to preserve both form and meaning; under time pressure there is no room to polish target-language phrasing. Grasp the meaning and let go of the form — that is the norm in Spanish SI. Its great advantage is time efficiency: the speaker can talk continuously without interruption.

3. Linear rendering. Follow the source word order, choosing corresponding target-language expressions step by step. "Linear" here means following structure and word order — not word-for-word literalism. Linear rendering helps the audience follow the full speech and is widely considered the most efficient form of interpreting.

Many assume that since Chinese is our mother tongue, the difficulty of Spanish-to-Chinese interpreting lies only in understanding the Spanish in time — not in organizing Chinese sentences. That is a misconception: composing and delivering sentences, in a foreign language or your native one, is a skill and a talent — especially while simultaneously monitoring incoming speech.
