How Should SMEs Manage Translation? Lightweight Solutions, Right on Time

Mention "translation management system" and many SME owners react: that's for big companies, not us. That perception is outdated in 2022 — with cloud tools now widespread and subscription pricing moving down-market, small and mid-size globalizing companies can build their own translation management at very low cost.
Lightweight translation management has three cores. A term base: even a shared spreadsheet fixing the standard renderings of product names, models and key selling points prevents the most common low-level errors. A translation memory: everything translated is stored, so repeated content is never paid for twice — a product manual revised annually often contains only twenty to thirty percent genuinely new material. A vendor workflow: settle on one or two reliable translation providers with a stable contact and delivery spec — far less trouble than shopping around on price for every project.
The free and entry tiers of cloud TMS platforms already cover basic SME needs, and many translation companies will host term bases and memories for long-term clients, so the enterprise needn't build its own system.
The fiercer global competition gets, the more details decide outcomes. The "small matter" of translation management is precisely where brand professionalism shows most directly.
