2025 Language Industry Market Report: Traditional Services Dip, Language Tech Grows

Illustrated 2025 language industry market report

In early 2025, industry research firm Slator published its annual language industry market report, and a set of contrasting figures sketches the industry's structural shift: the global market for language solutions and technology is about USD 31.7 billion; traditional language services revenue dipped about 2%, while language technology providers grew about 12%; and under an expanded definition including AI-enabled emerging services (multimodal content, speech and video workflows, data creation and annotation), the overall market grew 18%.

These figures precisely capture the real shape of "the language industry in the AI era": total demand is growing, but value is migrating from "per-word translation execution" toward "technology-driven language solutions". The report also notes that 84% of language service providers received client requests in the past year to "review and improve AI-generated content" — human review has not been eliminated by AI; it has been amplified by it.

The report dedicates chapters to two trends: "live AI speech translation" and "Translation as a Feature" (TaaF) — general tech platforms embedding language capability as a core feature are changing how enterprises procure language services.

For practitioners, the report's lesson is two-sided: companies clinging to traditional per-word models will keep suffering, while those embracing the compound "technology + professionalism" model are sharing in the industry's expansion.
