2022 Language Industry Market Report: Growing Scale, Differentiating Players

Illustrated 2022 language industry market report

In early 2022, language-industry research firm Slator published its annual market report. Despite the pandemic shock, the global language services market continues to expand and overall industry revenue has returned to growth — the long-term drivers of content globalization and enterprise digital transformation are intact.

The report outlines three structural threads. Top-tier concentration: the merged RWS/SDL integration is bearing fruit, TransPerfect and other leaders keep growing, and the global top ten's market share continues to rise. Specialization: specialist providers in life sciences, legal, gaming and streaming are outpacing the market, while generalist "jack-of-all-trades" agencies see their room narrow. Technology divergence: companies investing heavily in MT, cloud workflows and data analytics show markedly better margins and productivity than traditional operators.

The report also notes change on the supply side: freelance linguists are concentrating on platform marketplaces, specialist translators' bargaining power keeps strengthening, and purely generalist translators face intensifying competition.

For Chinese translation companies, the report's lesson is clear: scale is not the only moat — deepening domain expertise, binding to technology and building a professional brand can equally secure a firm position in the global value chain.
