RWS Completes SDL Acquisition, Reshuffling the Language Industry's Top Tier

On November 4, 2020, UK language service provider RWS announced the completion of its acquisition of peer SDL — the industry's most watched deal of the year. The merger combines SDL's translation business and Trados software line with RWS's strengths in patent translation and life-sciences localization, creating a group with roughly £850 million in annual revenue and placing it among the world's largest LSPs by revenue.

For the industry, the deal's significance goes beyond scale. SDL's Trados is the most widely used computer-aided translation (CAT) tool among professional translators, so any change of ownership reverberates through the entire linguist ecosystem. RWS, which grew out of patent and IP translation, now assembles a complete puzzle: IP services + enterprise localization + translation technology.

That a deal of this size closed in a pandemic year also demonstrates the sector's resilience: capital markets did not discount the industry's long-term value despite short-term demand turbulence.

For freelance linguists and small-to-mid-size agencies, consolidation at the top means shifts in the structure of incoming work — and continued evolution of the toolchain. The interplay between Trados and the cloud-based translation management systems will remain a defining technology storyline for years to come.
