Memsource Acquires Phrase: Cloud TMS Enters a Consolidation Phase

Illustrated translation management system consolidation

In January 2021, Czech cloud translation management system (TMS) vendor Memsource announced its acquisition of Hamburg-based translation technology company Phrase. Following RWS's 2020 acquisition of SDL, it was another landmark deal in language technology — cloud translation management platforms formally entered a consolidation phase.

The two products are highly complementary: Memsource brings deep strength in translation project management and enterprise workflows, while Phrase is known for developer-oriented localization automation. Combined, they cover both "document translation workflows" and "continuous software localization", competing more directly with RWS's Trados, Lokalise, Smartcat and others.

The deal reflects a broader trend: the value of a TMS no longer lies in "assigning jobs and tracking invoices" — it is becoming the hub of enterprise content globalization, connecting content management systems, code repositories, machine translation engines and global linguist networks.

For enterprise buyers of translation services, platform consolidation means smoother integrations and more complete reporting. For translation companies, fluency in the mainstream cloud TMS platforms has become the entry ticket for large enterprise work.
