2023 Language Industry in Review: Reconstruction in the First Year of AI

If one had to pick the most turbulent turning point in the annals of the language services industry, 2023 would win uncontested. It was the first year of AI — and a year in which the industry reconstructed itself.
Workflows rebuilt: large language models went from January's "shock" to December's "standard equipment" — mainstream CAT tools and TMS platforms completed AI integrations, "AI draft + human review" became the mainstream production mode for business content, and post-editing methodology upgraded from "correcting" to "verifying".
Business models rebuilt: per-word pricing loosened while tiered service bundles, subscriptions and value-based pricing rose; on providers' shelves, "transparent disclosure of the human-machine split" became a new foundation of trust.
Rules rebuilt: the EU AI Act reached political agreement, writing transparency duties for generative AI into law; the Hollywood strike settlements drew labor boundaries around AI use; and data security and AI compliance became hard requirements for enterprise clients.
Demand rose, not fell: the global language services market kept growing — falling translation costs activated long-tail demand that was previously "too expensive to translate", and the total pie of content globalization grew.
2023 proved one thing: the language services industry is not a victim of the AI revolution but one of the first industries to learn to dance with AI. In 2024, the tempo will only quicken.
