Japanese-Language Talent: A Warm Current in a Cold Job Market

While employment is broadly challenging, Japanese-language graduates fare relatively well, and the postgraduate market is larger with more opportunities. At Dalian University of Foreign Languages' School of Japanese, for example, the graduating class exceeded 400 students, yet the absolute number of recruiting employers still grew year-on-year — an optimistic estimate put over 90% of students with a placement.

Where Japanese-language talent goes

Statistics show the employment distribution: Japanese-invested enterprises account for 50–60%; government bodies (including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, local governments, customs, foreign trade offices and trade promotion associations) around 20%; university teaching and Japanese-language tour guiding around 10% each.

Joining a Japanese company: understand the workplace culture first

Japanese-invested companies are spread across southeastern coastal cities — Dalian, Yantai, Qingdao, Suzhou, Wuxi and more — with great growth potential in China. But the Japanese corporate working style differs from both Chinese and Western companies: hard work is expected; goals and processes are defined in fine detail and followed meticulously; everything must be reported to and confirmed with superiors. To join a well-managed Japanese company, keep three things in mind at the interview:

First, punctuality. If the interview is at 1:30 pm, the interviewer will likely arrive at 1:25 — and you should arrive three to five minutes early too. To Japanese employers, punctuality is an essential quality.

Second, mind the details. Dress neatly and appropriately — business attire is safest — and maintain eye contact with the interviewer; looking around is read as disrespect.

Third, image and expression. Answer concisely and in an organized way, showing respect for corporate culture and rules — this often impresses Japanese interviewers more than a glossy résumé.
