AI Enters Game Localization: Efficiency Gains and the Quality Floor

In 2023, the games industry's stance on AI translation shifted from watching to testing the water: multiple publishers began wiring large language models into localization pipelines, and the translation workflow for game text is being redesigned.
First to automate are highly structured texts: item descriptions, system prompts, UI strings, achievement descriptions — high-volume, high-repetition, relatively context-independent content where AI translation plus term bases and automated QA already reaches usable quality. Some publishers report localization cycles for such content compressed from weeks to days.
Story text and character dialogue, meanwhile, remain firmly held by human translators. A game's soul lies in its narrative: characters' catchphrases, the rewriting of puns, adaptation of cultural memes, lip-sync matching for dubbing scripts — these acts of "re-creation" remain too complex for AI. Mature industry practice is layered processing: AI handles bulk content, human experts handle narrative content and spot-check AI output for terminology and quality.
The games industry's practice offers the whole translation industry a referenceable sample: AI's value lies not in "replacement" but in "stratification" — giving each kind of content to the right production method, and spending professional translators' time where creativity is truly needed.
