Game Localization 2024: AI Efficiency and the Deep Water of Culturalization

In 2024, the "human-machine layering" of game localization is essentially settled. AI translation has taken over highly structured bulk content: item descriptions, system prompts, achievement text, help documentation — with term bases and automated QA, localization efficiency for such content has multiplied. Story text, character dialogue and cultural-meme adaptation, meanwhile, remain ever more firmly in human experts' hands.
This year, Chinese games' global push stayed strong, with several new titles breaking through in worldwide markets. Leading publishers' localization practice deepened in two directions: first, "upstream localization" — localization teams get involved at the scriptwriting stage, avoiding untranslatable culture-specific expressions at the source; second, deepening "culturalization" — beyond language, reviewing character designs, scene elements and seasonal events for target-market cultural fit.
Player communities' expectations of localization quality are also rising: on social media, players compare dialogue across language versions line by line — excellent adaptation earns praise, stiff translation instantly becomes a meme. This "player oversight" has objectively raised publishers' attention to localization quality.
Game localization's experience offers the whole industry a reference: AI for scale, humans for soul — nowhere is this dividing line validated more clearly than in games, the most demanding content field of all.
