Samsung Galaxy S24 Launches: Live Call Translation Built into the Phone

On January 17, 2024, Samsung held its Galaxy Unpacked event in San Jose and launched the Galaxy S24 series. AI was the undisputed star of the show, and among the most watched "Galaxy AI" features was Live Translate, built natively into the phone app: each party speaks their own language and the phone translates both ways in real time — processed on-device, with no need to upload audio to the cloud.

This is the first time cross-language calling has shipped as a native capability of a flagship smartphone, and its symbolic significance outweighs its current practical value: translation is sinking from "a dedicated app" to "a base capability of the operating system". Beyond call translation, the S24 also offers a face-to-face interpreter mode, chat translation and note translation, covering the main scenarios of everyday cross-language communication.

For the language services industry, the spread of on-device phone translation means further self-servicing of "simple communication" — directions, ordering, pleasantries will increasingly happen on devices. The logic matches the translator-device category: technology absorbs the long tail; professional services hold the high-value scenarios.

Notable is Samsung's emphasis on "on-device processing": voice data never leaves the phone, answering business users' privacy concerns — a design philosophy that rhymes with professional language services' insistence on data security.
