GALA 2023 Dublin: AI Is the Undisputed Protagonist

Localization-conference coffee break, attendees networking

In mid-March 2023, the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA) held its annual conference in Dublin, Ireland. Where previous years' agendas were "a hundred flowers blooming", this conference had one undisputed protagonist: large language models.

Discussions in and around the venue concentrated on practical questions: What level is LLM translation quality actually at? Most providers' testing concludes — at or near commercial grade on general text, but still requiring human control in specialist domains. How will LLMs change pricing? The traditional per-word model wobbles in the AI era, and value-based, subscription and per-project models were repeatedly debated. Will clients bypass providers and use AI directly? The consensus: low-end demand will drain away, but what enterprise clients truly buy is "accountability for quality" — precisely what AI cannot assume.

Technology vendors' booths confirmed the trend: mainstream TMS platforms announced LLM integrations one after another, and "AI features" went from selling point to standard equipment.

The signal from Dublin is clear and urgent: AI transformation is not a multiple-choice question but a timetable question. Fast-moving providers are already packaging LLM capability into client-facing service offerings.
