The Cross-Border E-Commerce Content Factory: Gains and Losses of AI at Scale

Cross-border e-commerce is one of the most thoroughly AI-translated scenarios. In 2025, leading global sellers' content production is highly industrialized: product information for millions of SKUs flows through "AI translation + rule engines + sampled review" pipelines, syncing to dozens of languages on a weekly-drop cadence — a capacity unimaginable three years ago.
The gains of scale are real: search-traffic growth from multilingual coverage is clearly visible, and an order-of-magnitude cost drop has made "full language coverage" the default rather than a strategic option. But the industry's lessons are equally deep: purely AI-generated product pages consistently underperform human-optimized versions on conversion — keyword selection for search, market-specific ordering of selling points, avoidance of cultural taboos — this "last mile of conversion" still requires people who know the market.
Mature sellers therefore operate in layers: the long tail of SKUs rides the AI pipeline; core hits and brand-flagship content get "AI draft + local marketing expert polish"; and copy for major sales events remains human-led transcreation.
E-commerce content's AI transformation offers the whole industry a sample: technology solves the "coverage" problem; humans solve the "persuasion" problem. Each has its place — neither is dispensable.
