After Translation Moves to the Cloud, Data Security Becomes Clients' First Concern

As cloud translation management systems (TMS) and online machine translation spread, clients' sensitive content — contracts, financial reports, technical drawings, medical records — increasingly flows through third-party servers. In 2021, data security moved from a "nice-to-have" on procurement checklists to a deal-breaker when choosing language service providers.

Enterprise clients' questions are concrete: In which country is translation data stored? Is it used to train machine translation models? How do linguists sign NDAs? Can data be thoroughly deleted after a project ends? Three years after GDPR took effect, the answers to these questions are directly tied to compliance liability.

Industry practice is evolving quickly: mainstream TMS vendors have rolled out data-residency options, fine-grained access control and audit logs; for high-confidentiality scenarios, some providers offer private deployments or isolated "no-egress" work environments; and free online MT tools are increasingly banned for work documents by corporate policy.

For translation companies, data-security capability requires real investment — policies, processes and infrastructure alike. What that investment buys is the long-term trust of high-value clients in finance, law and healthcare.
