CES 2024: AI Translation Hardware Shows Up in Force

In January 2024, the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) took place in Las Vegas as scheduled. At an edition where AI was everywhere, language translation hardware formed a small but lively category: new-generation translation earbuds, handheld translators and multilingual meeting-room devices debuted together, with several vendors wiring large language models into their translation engines.
The evolutionary direction of translation hardware at this show was clear: from "walkie-talkie style" turn-taking toward two-way simultaneous interpretation closer to natural conversation; offline packs covering more languages; and business-oriented devices emphasizing automatic meeting minutes and multilingual caption projection. The addition of generative AI visibly improved the colloquial naturalness of output.
Industry observers stayed sober: consumer translation hardware solves the "existence" problem in travel and everyday communication, and its accuracy remains orders of magnitude from professional interpreting; but in commercial settings — exhibition services, hotel front desks, cross-border retail — such devices are finding a stable place supplementing human staff.
LLM-era translation hardware no longer tries to "replace interpreters" — it focuses on driving the cost of simple communication toward zero. That clarity of positioning is itself a sign of the category's maturity.
