ATA65 Portland: The Translator Community's 'AI Normalization'

From October 30 to November 2, 2024, the American Translators Association (ATA) held its 65th Annual Conference in Portland, Oregon. Unlike ATA64 in Miami in 2023, where AI occupied half the agenda, this year's change was telling: AI was no longer a special track but seeped like air into nearly every topic — literary translation sessions discussed AI, legal translation sessions discussed AI, and career development couldn't avoid it either.

This "normalization" marks the community's maturing mindset: AI tool use is now the default background, and discussion has moved to finer questions — which text types suit AI first drafts, how to price AI-assisted services for clients, how to present one's AI skill set in a resume. Practice-sharing has replaced position-taking.

Another prominent theme was professional depth: the medical, legal, patent and literary translation tracks stayed hot, and "specialization is the best hedge against AI" was the speakers' general consensus. In recruiting and career sessions, new roles like "language quality engineer" and "AI review specialist" appeared, reflecting the profession's evolving shape.

From shock, to debate, to normalization — the translator community took two years to make its psychological peace with AI. In Portland's autumn rain, this ancient profession looked far more composed than it did two years ago.
