ATA62 Returns as a Hybrid Event: Reunited in Person, Together Online

From October 27 to 30, 2021, the American Translators Association (ATA) held its 62nd Annual Conference in Minneapolis. Unlike the fully virtual 2020 edition, this conference adopted a hybrid "in-person + online" format for the first time: some attendees gathered on site while many more joined from the cloud — the dual-track era of industry conferences has officially begun.

The hybrid format tests organizers twice over: the in-person track must deliver networking and safety, the online track must deliver audiovisual quality and engagement, and the two must interweave seamlessly in Q&A and polling. Attendee feedback suggests that while hybrid costs more, it significantly widened the conference's reach — linguists from developing countries unable to travel "walked into" the ATA conference at scale for the first time.

On the program, the most watched topics were rebuilding business after the pandemic, pricing and contract terms for remote interpreting, and the translator's positioning in the age of machine translation.
