AirPods Live Translation Ships with iOS 26: Consumer Simultaneous Interpreting Goes Mainstream

In September 2025, alongside the public release of iOS 26, Apple enabled Live Translation on AirPods Pro 3, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods 4 (ANC): wearers can hold face-to-face cross-language conversations with on-screen transcripts on the iPhone. The feature launched with English, French, German, Portuguese, and Spanish, with Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese announced for later in the year.

Following Samsung's Galaxy S24 call translation and Google's Pixel Buds, another top-tier platform has made live translation a system-level feature. Apple's differentiators are on-device processing—emphasizing privacy and offline availability—and deep integration into everyday communication flows.

Consumer-grade features are reshaping public understanding of translation services. As "earbud interpreting" becomes an everyday experience, client expectations shift: they understand better what machines can do, and they become more willing to pay a premium for what machines cannot—legally valid document translation, high-stakes medical interpreting, brand-voice transcreation. For language service providers, this is both education and triage: low-complexity scenarios go to devices, while the professional bar for high-value work becomes clearer.

We advise enterprise clients to re-tier their internal translation needs: which scenarios can be self-served with consumer tools, and which must follow professional workflows. A clear tiering strategy usually lowers total language cost more effectively than simply negotiating rates.
