2023 Outlook: Large Language Models Enter the Translator's Toolbox

At the start of 2023, one statistic is quoted everywhere: ChatGPT reached 100 million users in two months, the fastest-growing consumer application in history. Large language models (LLMs) entered public consciousness at unprecedented speed, and the translation industry stands first in line at the doorway of change.

Looking ahead from January, the industry's 2023 technology agenda is clear. Workflow reconstruction: LLMs will permeate every stage — pre-translation terminology extraction and background research, in-translation reference and polishing, post-translation QA and consistency checking. Service stratification: "pure AI translation" will absorb the low end, "AI + human review" becomes the mid-market mainstream, and expert linguists hold the high end. Shifting competency: the translator's core value moves from "bilingual conversion speed" to "quality judgment, domain depth and command of AI tools".

History is worth remembering: when neural MT spread in 2016, predictions that "translators will be unemployed in five years" were equally loud — seven years on, demand for professional translators has risen, not fallen; what disappeared were only ways of working that refused to evolve. The LLM shock will hit harder, but the logic is the same.

In 2023, the industry's question is no longer "whether to use AI" but "how to use AI well". The answers will take shape in this year's practice.
