EU AI Act Transparency Obligations Now Apply: The Era of Labeling Multilingual AI Content Begins

On August 2, 2026, the EU AI Act's Article 50 transparency and information obligations became generally applicable and enforceable by national competent authorities. Core requirements: providers and deployers must ensure people are informed when interacting with an AI system where applicable; AI systems generating synthetic text, audio, image, or video (including deepfakes) must mark outputs in a machine-readable, detectable way; and deepfakes depicting real persons, places, or events must be disclosed. Generative AI systems placed on the market before August 2 have a grace period for machine-readable marking until December 2, 2026; content generated before August 2 need not be retroactively labeled.

For multilingual content production, Article 50's impact is concrete and immediate: AI-dubbed multilingual videos, AI-voiced multilingual podcasts, and AI-generated localized graphics and text all fall within marking and disclosure duties when published to EU users. The European Commission's Code of Practice on Transparency of AI-Generated Content offers a voluntary practical compliance tool.

The boundary bears repeating: machine translation tools themselves are not high-risk, and routine document translation triggers no high-risk duties; Article 50 is about transparency, not prohibition—the compliance path is marking and disclosure, not stopping AI use. Three pragmatic steps for enterprises: inventory AI-generated content aimed at the EU, embed labeling into the publishing workflow, and retain human review records as oversight evidence.

When delivering AI-assisted multimedia localization projects, we now provide content labeling guidance and review records in step, helping clients' publishing workflows meet transparency requirements. Compliance is not the opposite of innovation—verifiable transparency is precisely the precondition for AI content to earn user trust.
